Fall Soccer Registration for 5th thru 8th grade boys and girls
The Salem Soccer Association (SSA) has opened up fall registration. Forms are available on the Junior High Page or may be picked up at Ferguson’s Auto Repair (1640 N Broadway). The SSA has expanded into 2 leagues and offers both recreational (local) soccer and traveling team soccer in the SWIS Southwest Illinois Soccer League. This season, players have three choices. They may sign up for Recreation, SWIS or both for just $45. The Association and its sponsors provide full uniforms. Leagues are divided by age/grade as follows: U14 for 7th and 8th graders and U12 for 5th and 6th graders. We recommend registering as soon as possible, but may accept registration until August 19th. There are still several openings for all teams at this time, however there is a limit to the number of players we can accept especially for the traveling teams.
Additional Information:
Due to the lack of players needed to form 2 seperate leagues, the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade players in the recreation program will play together on one of the two Salem teams. The 3rd team in the league is the Vandalia 5th-8th grade team. Games are all here at the FCC field.
There are 2 travel teams, one that has 5th and 6th grade boys and girls and a 7th and 8th grade boys and girls team. They will play in the SWIS league. In addition, in September, each of our travel teams will play in Vandalia for a friendly game

Spring 2011 article
2011 is going to be a great year for Salem Area Soccer
Expectations are for the Salem Soccer Association Junior High Program to jump to either 7 or 8 teams rather than just the 3 teams they had last fall. Our expansion includes adding 5th grade players and Vandalia is planning to put a team in our U14 league.
We are moving to a U14 and U12 designation for our two leagues. U14 refers to Under 14 years old on a designated date. Currently we are using September 1st 2010. This date is used for the current school year and will change to 9/1/2011 for the fall 2011 season. Therefore players age (14 and under on 9/1/2010) may play in our U14 league. They may even be 14 years old now. The U12 league can accept players that are currently 10 to 12 years old. Remember its under 12 as of 9/1/2010. More details are on the Junior High Page.
Two traveling teams are being offered to registered recreation league players. Players must try out for our Junior Wildcats teams and there is no additional charge to play on the team. We are excited about our 2 new coaches for our traveling teams.
Kyle Kelley will coach the U14 team and 6 games have been set up so far. Kyle has been involved in soccer for many years and was the assistant coach for the 2008 Wildcat Boys team. Besides his extensive knowledge about soccer, Kyle's ability to demonstrate extreamly well how to dribble, pass, and shoot the ball will be very helpful in the training of our players.
Tim Donoho will coach the U12 traveling team. Tim has coached in the City league (the Orange Crush) and last fall coached the Strikers 5th and 6th grade team that played in the South West Illinois Soccer League (SWIS). Southern Illinois does not have a lot of teams that play spring 5th and 6th grade (U12) Travel Team Soccer. We are working on getting games set up for this team. In the fall the Salem Soccer Association plans to put one or two teams in the SWIS League.
The city is considering converting Tully Park into a soccer complex. If they do, the city leagues, the SSA Junior High League, Junior Wildcats Travel Team and the SCHS Wildcats will play at the same facility.
The Ladycats will have Varsity and Junior Varsity teams for the Spring 2011 season. For the first time there are more girls interested in playing on the teams then we have uniforms for. More in the next article.
Hoodies are stilll available.
